Free Surface Flow

There are examples in which two continuous phases are separated by an intermittent surface.

  • Oil-water separators
  • Free surface flows
  • Decomposing small droplets that are highly dependent on mesh scales.

There may or may not be a slip between the phases.


Homogenous: It is assumed that both phases have a velocity (often assumed for free-surface flows) because the phases all have common field variables, except for volume fraction.

Heterogeneity: There is a possibility of slip between two continuous phases (for multiple phases)

Examples of surface tensions are often insignificant:
