Simulation of fluid flow inside the Kaplan turbine using ANSYS Fluent

One of the most common practical engineering applications of fluid mechanics is the design of turbomachines. Turbomachines are the hearts of industries. Some types of turbomachines add energy to the fluids like pumps and compressors while others extract energy from fluids like turbines. Kaplan turbine is a kind of propeller-type water turbines. Energy is absorbed by the blades from water flow and the blades can twist the wheel. Kaplan turbine has adjustable blades and we can control the flow rate and they also have high efficiency in low head applications. CFD simulation of Kaplan turbines will lead to improvement of design and better efficiency.

Reaction turbines are one of the most popular turbines used in the industry, which utilize axial and radial-axial flow concepts. Kaplan Turbine is also in this category. The throat input is a torsion that spins around the steering valves. The water is tangentially driven by guiding valves, and it is spiraling through the gritty blade, which ultimately causes the rover to rotate.

Two adjustment parameters of the angle of blades and guiding valves make the Kaplan turbines work in a wide range. In household applications, with an effective 60 cm range, inexpensive Kaplan turbines are made.
